Denton County Child Custody Lawyers

Aggressive and Respected Child Custody Attorneys for Parents in Texas

Many parents dread child custody cases. Being involved in a child custody case can make you feel as if your parenting skills are under a microscope. Whether you are getting divorced, or just starting to pursue your fathers' rights after proving paternity, it is important to be represented by an experienced Denton County child custody lawyer. Child custody can be a very complicated and emotional issue, depending on how you approach the case. If this is a high-conflict child custody case, you may need to litigate. Otherwise, you likely have the option of resolving your case through mediation.

The Ramage Law Group is experienced in all types of child custody proceedings. We find that nearly all child custody cases will result in some type of joint custody arrangement. This may mean that both parents spend an equal amount of time with the child, that one parent has primary custody and the other enjoys frequent visitation, or that one parent needs supervised visitation to keep the child safe. Our attorneys for parents will work with you to decide how best to approach your child custody case.

Attorneys for High-Conflict Child Custody Cases

An out-of-court resolution is not necessarily impossible in high-conflict cases. If both parents can recognize that working together to create a plan is best for their child, attorney-led negotiation may result in a sound agreement. However, it is best to prepare for litigation in these cases. If the court is tasked with making a decision, they will most likely send a guardian ad litem to investigate. A few relevant factors the court will consider include:

  • The child's needs and how each parent can meet those needs,
  • The child's desires,
  • Each parent's plans for the child,
  • How stable each parent's household is, and
  • Whether either parent might pose a threat to the child's physical or emotional safety.

Our attorneys have a lot of experience working with parents in high-conflict custody cases and will do all we can to protect your parent-child relationship.

Types of Child Custody Arrangements

Some of the most common types of parenting schedules include:

  • Primary custody and visitation - When one parent has relocated, or if one parent works odd hours or travels for work, it may make more sense for the child to live with one parent and see the other when school is out and the other parent is around.
  • 50/50 custody - If the parents live near each other and near the child's school, it may be possible for the child to spend an equal amount of time with both parents.
  • Supervised visitation only - In some cases, one parent is not so dangerous that the court does not want them to see the child at all, but has some risk factors, like a treated substance abuse problem or a recent criminal conviction. The court may then allow that parent to spend a few hours at a time with their child under supervision.

You should know that sole custody is very rare. It is only ordered when one parent poses a clear threat to the child's wellbeing. If one parent has been convicted of abusing or endangering a child, has an extensive history of family violence, or is a sex offender, the other parent may be able to obtain sole custody. However, supervised visitation is generally preferred to sole custody.
